New to Wireless technology

alphaWorks provides emerging wireless technologies from IBM Research and development labs that help in shaping the adoption and standardization of technology approaches. Along with the technology downloads, there are demos, discussion forums, and resources that allow you to interact with creators of the technology and the broader user community.

1. What is wireless technology?

Wireless computing is computing without wires and phone lines by using a variety of devices such as laptop and notebook computers, tablets, personal digital assistants (PDAs), e-mail-only devices, handheld computers, and "wearable" technology.

Wireless technology's major benefit to users is the immediate access it offers to computing resources such as their office, other businesses, or the Internet; in this way, users are given a higher degree of flexibility in work and entertainment choices. As a method of data transport, wireless technology is like wired technologies in that it comprises hardware devices, a method of transmission, and connections that transform data from the human-input type to a machine-transferable format, and then back again.

2. Getting started with emerging wireless technology

Wireless technology on alphaWorks is divided into the following categories:

  • Communication - Technologies include browser-based services, broadband services, wireless embedded hardware systems and data services.
  • Management - Technologies include network and wireless management applications, wireless handheld terminals, and features such as order taking, remote monitoring, and inventory management functions.
  • Voice – Speech and voice tools for pervasive computing
  • Mobile devices – Tools for handheld and other mobile devices
  • Middleware – Technologies for integration, communication and building pervasive applications.

Get started with these emerging technologies:
Web Services Tool Kit for Mobile Devices provides tools and run-time environments that allow development of applications that use Web services on small mobile devices, gateway devices, and intelligent controllers.
IBM Forms for Mobile Devices is a mobile forms preview, based on XML technology, that provides a robust platform on which application developers can quickly create and deploy robust, forms-based enterprise applications on mobile devices.
Embedded ViaVoice Multi-Application SDK is a software development kit for embedded speech that allows multiple applications simultaneous access to Automatic Speech Recognition and Text-To-Speech resources on an embedded device.

The developerWorks Wireless technology zone also has a wealth of resources, including articles, tutorials, and tips.
